Overview
An Exception Plan can replace either a Stage Plan or an entire Project Plan. An Exception Plan covers the period from when it is created to the end of the stage or project (depending on which plan is in 'exception'). From the moment it is forecasted to exceed its tolerances, a project no longer has the approval of the Project Board.
The Configuration Item Records for each product included in the plan must be checked and the remaining work included in the Exception Plan. The Exception Plan should have been preceded by an Exception Report.
The Project Manager, working with the Project Support Office and the Configuration Librarian creates the Exception Plan using the process PL Planning.

Tips
- Check to see if the exception has adversely affected the Business Case.
- Be wary of over estimating the ability to recover from a forecast deviation.
- If the plan is approved by the Project Board despite knowingly going beyond tolerances the Project Manager has no option but to continue.
